To meet break dependence on Russian gas, the European countries are counting on heat pump revolution. In the first half of 2022, sales of domestic heat pumps is doubled in many EU countries . Such as, Germany is Europe’s largest consumer of Russian gas, but in 2022, its demand cut 52 percent last year. Meanwhile, heat pumps are installation increasing in Netherlands, the U.K., Romania ,Poland, and in Austria.
“Five years ago, most companies knew next to nothing about heat pumps,” says Veronika Wilk, a senior research engineer at the Austrian Institute of Technology. “Now companies are aware of them, and ever more heat pumps are installed in industry.”
A compression heat pump can both warm and cool air or floor for house. Let’s say you’re living in New England and shelling out big bucks to fill up a decades-old fuel oil furnace each winter, and you don’t have air conditioning but want it to deal with increasingly sweltering summers. That amounts to a strong economic case for heat-pump adoption: Instead of paying for the most expensive heating and paying extra for a new air conditioner, you can buy one appliance and do both more efficiently.
Heat pumps use electricity to compress a refrigerant, raising its temperature. Heat pumps only move fluids around, they can be more than twice as energy efficient as heaters that burn fuel.
According to the estimation of the German think tank Agora Energiewende, in five years, a widespread to domestics and industrial heat pumps, combined with efficiency measures, could cut EU natural gas use by 32 percent.
One report shows that, as for the USA, which relies largely on fossil fuels for heating, the expansion of domestic heat pump water heaters in single-family homes could slash emissions by 142 million metric tons each year, which can reduce energy sector emissions by 14 percent.
